Pony Club Championships hailed great success
The UK Pony Club Polocrosse
Championships were hailed a huge success as 135 players
took part, the highest ever number and a 35% increase on
2009 (which was in itself a 30% increase on 2008). North
Warwickshire defended their title in the Championship class
(where teams field both a senior and a junior section),
indeed both their sides made the final but the North Warwickshire
Blues and Royals were crowned champions despite losing to
the North Warwickshire Red Arrows in the final. This was
because the Red Arrows fielded Pip Rowland in their junior
section, and the organising committee adjudged him to be
illegible to play for them as he had only very recently
transferred to the North Warwickshire branch from another
branch. He was incredibly influential in the final as the
Red Arrows won by 12 goals, despite their senior section
going down by a couple of goals.
Hertfordshire Hunt also did
a double as they once again picked up the Malvern trophy.
The Malvern trophy is played off for in the third and fourth
play off in the Championship class and this year Herts Hunt
came from behind after 3 chukkas to overcome Rockwood Harriers
and retain the shield.
In the Charles Mason trophy
for senior sections it was a tied result between Flint and
Denbigh and Dartmoor Hunt. With so many teams in this division
the organisers split it in two pools and then the final
could not ultimately be played due to time and horse fatigue
and so the trophy was jointly awarded to both clubs.
In the Stoneleigh Junior Championships
it was Brecon Hunt who won out, though there was also some
controversy in this class as disputes reigned over whether
North Cornwall, who finished second, played a pony bigger
than the 14.2hh height limit.
In the Brookes Mini Championships
there was no such problems and it was North Down who reigned
supreme, capping a pretty good weekend for the Irish pony
clubs who had made the long journey over. The Hurworth Hunt,
returning the championships are a gap of a few years, picked
up second place.
